El-Massrieen: Egypt's First Pop Band

“El-Masreyeen” (The Egyptians) were the first Egyptian pop band. Founded by Hany Shenouda in 1977, the group brought new harmonies, electronic sounds and instruments to Egypt’s music scene.

Shenouda conceptualized the group as a way of modernizing Egyptian music without resorting to covering foreign songs: “We transformed Egyptian music from being monophonic music, where the singer and the orchestra would play the same note, to polyphonic music that makes the keyboard, the bass, etcetera, play different notes.” Their song “Longa 79” became an Egyptian football anthem.
Habibi Funk included a number of their tracks in the 2017 album Habibi Funk 006: Modern Music.

المصريين كانت أول فرقة مصرية لموسيقى البوب، أسسها هاني شنودة سنة ١٩٧٧، وقد ساهمت في إدخال نغمات جديدة وأصوات إلكترونية وأدوات موسيقية غربية إلى المشهد الموسيقي المصري.
اعتبر شنودة أن فرقته هي وسيلة لتحديث الموسيقى المصرية دون الحاجة للاقتباس من الموسيقى الغربية: “نحن استطعنا تحويل الموسيقى المصرية من موسيقى أحادية اللحن، حيث المطرب والفرقة يتبعان نفس النوتة، إلى موسيقى متعددة الألحان، تجيز العزف بنتوتات مختلفة، على الأجهزة الكهربائية المتنوعة وفي نفس الوقت”. وقد أصبحت أغنيتهم “لونغا ٧٩” النشيد الرسمي لفريق كرة القدم المصري
